The first time I heard about bikram yoga was from a magazine. I was intrigued by the words “doing a workout in a 40 degree room for 90 minutes long”!
Driven by curiosity I did my first bikram class in Amsterdam in 2008. It felt great! But immediately I knew this was not practical, because I live in Utrecht and there was no bikram school in Utrecht at the time. Until 2010. That year on 1st January Bikram Yoga Utrecht opened; and I was there, together with about 60 other bikram yoga enthusiasts. Since then I stayed and practiced bikram yoga.
Initially, it was all about the physical; the sweating, the hard work. As I work 4 days a week behind the computer, this sequence was a blessing. I felt great after every class. I can literally feel the tension – that has built up during the day – leave my body with each asana/savasana.
After a while, I noticed the sequence taught me more; I got more patient with my body, and the practice became more gentle.
Now as a yoga teacher, I hope to provide a safe place for students to practice and to figure out how their body works, and their mind … all at their own pace.
