I was always keen to deepen my practice and complete a yoga teacher training course. As hot yoga is my regular practice it seemed natural to follow a course in Ghosh Yoga, which is based on the teachings of Bishnu Ghosh, Bikram’s guru. This course helped me to recognize the purpose of the postures, giving deeper insight into the different aspects of yoga instruction, focus and relaxation. I enjoy sharing this in my teaching.
My yoga practice began in Singapore in 2016. When I moved to Nijmegen in 2021 to teach English at Radboud University, Hot Yoga was the obvious choice. I was familiar with doing yoga in warm temperatures. That’s how I discovered Alma Hot Yoga and the Bikram classes!
I like all types of yoga. I started with Hatha, then started doing Iyengar and then tried Ashtanga. I found the more regularly I practiced yoga, the more satisfying my original Sunday morning yoga session became. During the pandemic, I continued to practice with my first ever yoga teacher online, whilst living in Bangladesh, compounding my preference for hot yoga. I noticed that in cooler temperatures I am less able to extend, which I understand now is related to the fascia or connective tissue releasing as a consequence of the heat.
Consequently, Bikram classes at Alma Hot Yoga became my go-to classes. The tempo and the heat match my character. I have been a member of almost all the studios in Nijmegen city centre. I still like to explore other varieties of yoga, but the focus on therapeutic strengthening is really beneficial for me. Aside from doing yoga, I’ve run marathons, and walked and cycled long distances. I feel I have recovered from these endurance events more quickly – specifically as a consequence of 26+2 series. I hope that yoga practitioners that join my classes feel the same benefits and empowerment as I have.
